Q. What's your special Captain Starlight talent?
I love playing famous guitar riffs on my Starlight ukulele. It always makes the kids and parents smile when I start to rock out on my ukulele after playing a gentle version of “twinkle twinkle little star”.
Q. How has life to-date prepared you for becoming Captain Starlight?
Prior to becoming Captain Starlight, I trained in theatre and worked as a freelance artist. This inlcuded schools tours, teaching theatre workshops and performing in productions for QTC and LaBoite theatre. I was also in the actor’s ensemble of the Queensland Theatre Company. All the skills I gathered over the years on the stage, in the arts world and in the school classroom have really helped me become Captain Starlight.
Q. How did you first discover Planet Starlight?
I was working on a stage show with a Captain Starlight and he would tell us these amazing stories about some of the kids he had met and the hospitals he would visit. I kept thinking how awesome the job sounded and how much I would love to be doing something similar. So, he gave me the contact details and I was lucky enough to start work in 2005.
Q. Why do you like spreading smiles for Starlight?
The impact of a smile and relieving the tension of a stressed hospital room with laughter can’t be measured. The fun we create and the connections we form have huge effects in the lives of many. I have had so many magical moments and met so many beautiful and courageous children that I continually feel inspired and revitalised by the job. It is rare to be able to say that about jobs in general, so I do feel blessed to work in such a role.
