Wishgranting Coordinator, Brisbane
Q: Why did you decide to come to Starlight?
I’d been working in the not-for-profit sector for 14 years; in my previous role I was a program coordinator at Camp Quality, organising a recreational program for children with cancer and their families. When I heard about the opportunity to grant Starlight Wishes, I was really keen to utilise my program skills in a different area. I can honestly say that granting wishes is an absolutely amazing job and the rewards are immeasurable.
Q: Why do you like working at Starlight?
I feel so lucky to have this opportunity to grant wishes to seriously or chronically ill children. Whenever I tell people what I do for a living they say I must have the most amazing job, and I tell them I do! I’m also very fortunate to work with a fantastic group of dedicated, hard working and ‘fun’ people in my office.
Q: What are your goals at Starlight?
To make a difference in the lives of seriously and chronically ill children, and to always do the best job I can.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your role?
Being present on wishgranting days is wonderful; it’s heartwarming when you see how happy the children are to have their Starlight Wish granted. To be able to facilitate this happiness is priceless! Receiving feedback and seeing photos of smiling kids on the day that their wish is granted is also very special.
Q: What has been the most amazing experience you’ve had so far?
I’ve had many amazing experiences at Starlight but my first wish presentation helped me appreciate the impact a Starlight Wish has on a child and their family. A very special girl had wished for a British Bulldog and I was there with Captain Starlight to present the most adorable little puppy. The Starlight child’s excitement was overwhelming as was the look of pure joy on her face when she saw the puppy, which she promptly named Starlight! It was so special to see how happy the family were that their little girl’s dream had come true.
