William's Story

Starlight grants William's Wish

William was diagnosed with Leukaemia last year at the age of five.

One Saturday morning, William woke up saying he had a pain in his side, which had started the night before.

Mum knew something was not right and rushed William to hospital. The doctors undertook blood tests and transferred him to a children’s hospital, putting him in isolation. “It was a frightening time. I was looking into his room – he appeared so pale and thin – I knew something was really wrong,” said Mum Mary-Ann.

Finally his family received the diagnosis – their little boy had cancer. Mum said, “We were devastated. The whole situation was very surreal.”

William began eight months of intensive chemotherapy treatment. At first, William was reluctant to do anything. “William was very scared at the beginning and he did not understand what was going on” said Mum.

But when William discovered the Starlight Express Room, he didn’t want to leave – it gave him confidence and provided relief from treatment. William says, “When I’m in the hospital, I’m in my angry and scared body, but I don’t feel like that when I’m in the fun room.”

William’s Starlight Wish is to spend time on a working farm. William says he would like to fix tractors, milk cows, collect eggs from chickens, round up cattle, ride and feed horses, and play with dogs.
