You helped Charlotte face every challenge with a smile
After becoming critically ill with severe pneumonia soon after her first birthday, Charlotte’s life changed forever.
As her tiny body began to shut down, she was placed on life support.
“It was so frightening seeing her hooked up to all those machines,” her mum said.
During treatment, Charlotte suffered a stroke and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy and an immune deficiency. She endured countless procedures including ventilations, dialysis, chest drainings, and heart and lung surgery.
Now, five years on, hospital is still part of Charlotte’s life and every procedure, and every admission brings fear and stress.
“To say she doesn’t like going under an anaesthetic is an understatement,” her mum Simone says.
But with your kind support, the Starlight Express Room and Captain Starlight give Charlotte something fun to look forward to and make hospital feel less overwhelming.
Simone remembers the joy on Charlotte’s face when it was Lego day in the Starlight Express Room - the fear and worry of hospital suddenly felt like a world away.
“The Captain Starlight's surprised her with a Lego set. They’re amazing at turning difficult days around.”
As she grows older, Charlotte can’t always keep up with her peers, but she faces every challenge with a smile and determination.
And thanks to you, she has moments of lasting joy to look back on from her Starlight Wish. Her Disney Cruise wish was filled with happiness and unforgettable memories including meeting her favourite Disney characters!
“We had the most amazing time on Charlotte's wish. Seeing her so full of confidence, laughter and joy was truly magical; it’s something we’ll treasure forever.” – Simone.
How Mason found happiness in an unexpected place
When Mason arrived for his cardiology appointment at a hospital in Nhulunbuy in the NT, he was shy and withdrawn. Suddenly being in the unfamiliar world of a health clinic felt isolating and overwhelming.
But thanks to you, that moment didn’t stay that way for long.
Through Starlight’s Healthier Futures Initiative, Captain Starlight was there for Mason, first chatting about different games, then inviting him to play. Soon, he was laughing, learning a new card game and coming out of his shell.
After his appointment, Mason was all smiles as he waved goodbye.
The next day, his mum saw the Captain Starlights and said:
“Thank you. Mason won’t stop talking about you. He wants to go back to the hospital!”
That’s the impact you have- helping to transform healthcare for kids in remote communities.
Stage actor, Richard Hughes didn’t have children of his own but recognised the importance of creating joy where it’s needed most. Through a transformational bequest, he chose to leave a legacy that will live on in the lives of others.
His gift helped bring the new Starlight Express Room at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, to life- creating a place where children can take a break from the fear and stress of hospital and simply be kids.
At the official opening of the new room, his cousin Alison proudly cut the ribbon, honouring Richard’s deeply personal and long-held intention.
His family shared: “Richard would have been thrilled with the use to which Starlight has put his bequest. The potential for it to help change the life experiences of hundreds of kids over many years is absolutely outstanding.” – Ray & Val
Richard’s legacy is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of a bequest helping seriously ill children and their families, now and long into the future.
Supporter Spotlight: Arlo's Big-Hearted Starlight Day Fundraiser
From his hospital room, Arlo had a bright idea.
During his frequent hospital visits, Captain Starlight was always there with fun and games helping him feel calmer and more positive.
Inspired, Arlo wanted other seriously ill children to have that same joy.
So, with the help of his mum Georgia, Arlo created a special video to share with his school.
“On Starlight Day, everyone could wear purple and yellow, bring a gold coin, and together raise funds to buy toys for the Starlight Express Room.”
Despite his own challenges, Arlo was thinking of others, inspiring his whole school community to come together.
With the support of his family, they raised an incredible $310 for what his mum describes as “Arlo’s favourite place.”
