What is a Starlight Wish? A Starlight Wish is like a dream come true for a child or adolescent with a serious or chronic condition. It provides meaningful experiences, has life impacting benefits and can give the whole family a break from the stress of their child’s condition.
Why does my child qualify for a Starlight Wish? To qualify for a Starlight Wish a child must have a critical, chronic or serious medical condition or disability and be aged 18 or under.
What can my child wish for? A child’s Starlight Wish is an individual experience designed to bring to life their dreams and interests. Whilst there are some limitations to what a child can wish for, we aim to provide a life impacting experience that will stay with them forever. All Starlight Wishes are granted within Australia.
When will the Wish happen? Your Wish journey begins as soon as you confirm you want to proceed with the Wish and that you are able to have your Wish within 12 months. Starlight will start working with you on the Wish at this point, with the aim being to have a Wish choice locked in within 3 months and the Wish granted within 12 months. Starlight will work with your family to determine the most suitable time for your child to have their Starlight Wish within the 12 month period.
How long does it take to grant a Starlight Wish? The time that it takes to grant a Starlight Wish depends on each individual child’s situation and wish choice.
Is there a time limit? Wishes made possible within 12 months of being introduced to a Wish program fuels anticipation and excitement. Having a Wish, and having positive expectations that it will be granted, brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when the Wish comes true. The Wish process generates hope, positive emotions and optimism and with this in mind the aim is to grant the Wish within 12 months of being accepted on to the program.
Who can be involved in the Starlight Wish? A Starlight encourages families to be involved in the Starlight Wish and provides for immediate family only including siblings who are aged 18 or under at the time of the Wish being accepted. Please discuss with your Family Relationship Coordinator if the Starlight Wish child wants extended family or friends to be involved.
Is it going to cost anything? No! There are no financial requirements, and you will not be asked to provide any information regarding your income or financial standings. The expenses Starlight agrees to pay for are those foreseeable and directly related to the fulfilment of the Wish however you may incur costs for anything extra you would like to add or in the event of any unforeseen circumstances beyond Starlight’s control.
What do I have to do? We encourage parents and guardians to help their child decide what to wish for, however you are not expected to assist with the organisation of the Starlight Wish — Starlight will do all of that for you!
What happens next? You will be contacted by your Starlight Family Relationship Coordinator and the steps will take place as highlighted above.
