Captain Starlight is a superhero from Planet Starlight. Our team of Captain Starlights capture sick kids’ imaginations and create a positive environment, filled with fun, joy and laughter.
Drawing on their unique talents, they’re highly skilled professional performers who help sick kids through their most challenging moments. Captain Starlights are a critical part of a child’s overall care.
Before I donned the silver cape I was (and still am) a comedian, actor, writer, voiceover artist and content producer.
Two of my comedian buddies highly recommended applying for the role with Starlight. I honestly thought it would be a cool little job on the side. I had no idea that 10 years later, I’d still be here and the job would have taken me around Australia and the world, introduced me to my wife and helped me become the accomplished film producer I am today.
This job is about developing on a journey, not instantly arriving at a destination. No one is automatically super brilliant, and you don’t have to be great at everything all at once. My greatest take-away from this job is learning how to slow down, be present and really listen to, and be patient with people from all walks of life.
I’ve been a professional improviser for over 20 years. This job is often all about saying, “Yes and…” and you can’t do that with a busy, racing mind. A great deal of the children in hospital are going through a lot, they’re often medicated and thinking at a cognitively slower speed. If a child doesn’t answer your question straight away, I’ve learnt not to fill the silence with another question. It’s better to be patient, count to 10 or 20 in your head and I promise you’ll be amazed with the outcome.
Starlight has always encouraged me to feed my existing skills as a filmmaker and performer into Starlight TV. Through Starlight I’ve attended an incredible innovation course with Inventium, my wife and I spent three months in the UK trialing their UK Captains Program and I've also been given the opportunity to produce and direct numerous corporate videos, music videos, animated cartoons and sketches.
My amazing Managers have always listened to what I’ve needed to make my career here a fulfilling one and are super supportive of my outside work. It’s always been made clear to me that the skills I develop as an actor and filmmaker feed back into my role at Starlight. A lot of us are working actors and we are supported to audition or do a voice-over. Not many other jobs have that level of flexibility.
If you’re a creative professional who loves working with people, you couldn’t find a better job to support and supplement your creative career. Having a job where your mission is to brighten up the days of children and their families, who would otherwise be pretty upset, is fulfilling and humbling.
