Starlight Children’s Foundation (Starlight) is aware of a cyber security incident involving Pareto Phone, an organisation we previously worked with to contact individuals on our behalf. We have been disappointed to have been informed of this. Analysis indicates some individuals’ information from 2013 / 2014 is involved.

What happened

Earlier this year Pareto Phone was the victim of a cyber security incident resulting in access to their system by an unauthorised third party. At the time, we received assurances there was no evidence of access to data relevant to us. However, we have now become aware that historic information has been found in a small number of affected files.

Who is affected

We understand limited information from 2013 / 2014 has been found about some individuals linked to Starlight. This may include a combination of name, date of birth and basic contact details (physical address / email / phone if provided). In a small number of cases, this also includes a bank account number.

As part of the Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme under the Privacy Act, this information does not meet the criteria for formal notification. However, our supporters are incredibly important to us so, in the interest of transparency, we wanted to share this with you.

We have already begun the process of notifying all impacted supporters and we will continue to do so as investigations continue.

What does this mean for you?

We would like to take this opportunity to assure you there is no evidence that any of the information has been misused as a result of this cyber security incident. However, in this day and age, if any scammers contact you with personal information they may appear more legitimate. You should remain alert to any potentially fraudulent or suspicious activity, especially clicking on links in emails or text messages, no matter how legitimate they appear.

Starlight is working with IDCARE, Australia’s national identity and cyber support community service. They have expert Case Managers who can provide additional guidance at no cost to you. If you wish to speak with one of their expert Case Managers, please use the referral code STLT23 and complete an online Get Help form at www.idcare.org or call 1800 595 160 (9am-5pm AEST Monday to Friday excluding public holidays).

Thank you for your understanding. Individuals like you help Starlight brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families every day.
