Tyson spent the first four years of his life in and out of the hospital after being diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatious Disease at just 10 months old.

The rare genetic disease leaves Tyson highly susceptible to frequent and potentially life threatening infections, so the diagnosis was a hugely stressful one for parents Michael and Benchaporn.

Due to his risk of infection, even when he wasn’t in hospital, Tyson was unable to go to childcare, or join in on activities with other kids his age. The family kept mostly to themselves to try to minimise the risks.

Tyson endured a series of painful infections, blood tests and surgeries as he battled the disease.

When Tyson was four, doctors performed a bone marrow transplant which lead to an entire month of isolation on the hospital ward.

During this time, Captain Starlight would come to his door each day to help put a smile on his face. Tyson also loved watching Starlight TV, with the daily quiz his favourite activity!

Since recovering from his transplant, Tyson has been going from strength to strength. He was so very excited when he was finally able to live out his lifelong dream of seeing snow, thanks to his Starlight Wish.

Tyson, together with his mum and dad, and younger brother Alexander had a ball learning to ski and snowboard together at Thredbo.

Mum Benchaporn described their amazing trip as “a dream come true after such a rough and scary journey”.

She also puts Tyson’s kind-hearted nature down to all the love and support he was shown during his toughest times in hospital.

The family are keen to share the incredible positive impact Starlight has had on their family throughout their medical ordeal.
