After my studies, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I decided to just get an office-based job, make some money, and hope I figured things out. Luckily, I did!
I landed a job at a recruitment agency and quickly found a passion for helping people with their careers (ironic, huh!). During this time, I was working in the blue-collar space which exposed me to many random things like visiting all kinds of interesting factories. Never in a million years would I think I’d find warehouse production interesting, but it’s truly something else!
When I saw a recruitment role advertised at Starlight, at a children’s charity, I just knew that would be the perfect fit! The idea of supporting people through a recruitment process for a job where they then support sick kids just felt like a dream role!
Fast forward to my phone screen and interviews, I was blown away by how kind, friendly, and professional the team was. To this day, I reflect on those feelings before speaking to candidates and try to recreate my experience for them.
My job title is Talent Sourcing Advisor, but I like to think of myself as a professional matchmaker.
It all starts by collaborating with hiring managers to understand their recruitment needs. I then work closely with candidates to understand their career goals, skills, and how they can #SHINE at Starlight!
My key role is to guide both parties through the recruitment process, ensuring a smooth and supportive experience for everyone involved.
I love that throughout the entire recruitment process, I get to hear so many amazing stories about our impact and our incredible team members! During interviews, I often find myself holding back tears after hearing a touching story about a Starlight Wish child or an amazing experience a team created in the hospital. I’m forever proud of the work we do.
I also really love it when we find that unicorn candidate! I can’t really explain it, but after countless emails, calls and interviews, when we finally meet that Starlight candidate – it just feels like magic.
I’ve also been lucky that every workshop and L&D opportunity I've had at Starlight has been an incredible mix of skills to apply both at work and in my personal life. This really goes to show “Best Self, Best Starlight.”
Attending the Basecamp workshop with Paul Mitchell from The Human Enterprise was a real highlight and such an invaluable experience, not just professionally but personally. There hasn't been a day since then that I haven't used a tool from that workshop. (I am a Paul Mitchell fan, through and through!)
I always describe working at Starlight as being similar to Dorothy stepping into the colourful world of “The Wizard of Oz.”
Suddenly, those previous jobs or organisations that might have dulled your world begin to lift, and you see colour again! People are kinder, work is fun, and together we brighten the lives of sick kids.
