Andrea's story

I first moved to Brisbane from my hometown of Towoomba to study at the University of Queensland. I ended up loving it so much, that I decided to make it my new home.

Volunteering has always been somewhat of a passion of mine, as I enjoy helping others in whatever way I can. I'm also always up for trying new things, meeting new people and exploring new places whenever I get the chance.

When I first started looking at volunteering opportunities in Brisbane, the stars just aligned. The new Starlight Express Room was just opening and I had a new job with flexible hours which meant I was able to dedicate the time each week.

Of course, the volunteer role looked fantastic.

Starlight is all about having fun and providing a distraction for sick children and their siblings, which makes for a pretty amazing volunteering opportunity. Who doesn't like playing games, having fun and letting your inner child take over, so I registered straight away.

No two days are the same when you volunteer in the Starlight Express Room. The opportunities for fun and creativity are endless!

I love that volunteering with Starlight not only brings joy and laughter to children and their families, but also to those who work and volunteer with the organisation.

There have been so many moments over the years which have been incredibly memorable.

My favourite moments will always be interacting with a child who, when they walk in, is feeling down or a bit shy, but after a bit of silliness and fun you can see them transform into their normal self - bright, bubbly and full of laughter and joy.

Watching the family's reactions to these transformations and seeing their little one having an absolute blast is always something memorable to be a part of.

If anyone was considering applying as a volunteer, I’d highly recommend it.

You’re part of an amazing community, and you have the chance to let out your inner child, while also bringing a spark of happiness and laughter to so many amazing children and their families.

What’s not to love about that!?!
