Pam's story

I'm married with three daughters, a son-in-law, two delicious grandchildren and four fur kids. I love to travel, I belong to a book club, I enjoy entertaining, spending time with family and friends and attending group fitness classes.

I've always wanted to work with children, so when I retired I came across to Starlight. Starlight's mission of brightening the lives of those who access the Starlight Express Room really resonated with me - we're a perfect match.

On my very first volunteer shift in the Starlight Express Room in Monash Children's Hospital, I was given the nickname "Pom-Pom Pam" by one of the Captain Starlights. Needless to say, I'm now easily recognised by all my different pompom headbands!

My favourite thing about my volunteer role is seeing the transformation of the children. Their smiles and laughter when they engage in all that the Straight Express Room has to offer really is amazing to witness.

On a recent shift, some regular visitors came into the room, saw I was there and shouted to their Mum that "Pom-Pom Pam is here!" That melted my heart! It really made me feel like I do make a positive impact on their lives.

There are different options for volunteering within Starlight, so I'd recommend choosing the area that best matches with you. It's one of the most rewarding things you can do, not only for the children but also for your own personal fulfilment and growth.

I really do love being a Starlight vollie. We're important and valued members of the Starlight team.
