Charlotte's story

Being blessed with good health, I believe it is my duty to improve the lives of others who are not so fortunate, and Starlight provided the perfect opportunity.

I really feel I'm making a difference and seeing kids' faces light up when they come into the room is special to witness.

When I arrive for my shift, I help set up the room for the day. I welcome children of all ages and their families into the room and help them to get settled. I'm involved in a number of activities like making craft packs, having intense Mario Kart battles, playing a board game, going on ward visits with the Captain Starlights or simply having a chat with someone.

My passion is making people laugh. I believe in the power of a smile and laughter is just one way to do that. I am passionate about sport and the outdoors as well as music and the performing arts and this wide spectrum has enabled me to bond over shared interests with many children.

The other volunteers are incredibly friendly and we all work together to make sure everything is running smoothly and the visitors are having a good time which makes it an enjoyable experience.

Recently, a young girl came into the room and wasn't sure what she wanted to do. I offered to show her the craft table and her eyes lit up when she saw we were making 'Bluey' headbands that day. She got so excited and decided to make some for her siblings as well.

It is lovely to know that the Starlight Express Room provides a welcome distraction for families. You are able to help them relax and take their mind off the outside world.  

To me, the role as Program Volunteer in the Starlight Express Room is a perfect fit. It it allows me to be myself and do what I love - putting smiles on kid's faces. If I can brighten up one child's day then I feel I have made a positive difference in the world. 

To anyone thinking of joining the Starlight volunteer team, I'd say do it! It is a fantastic environment as there is always something exciting happening at Starlight. The Captains and Volunteers are all so supportive and you feel very fulfilled after each shift.
